The following paper discusses breath-holding spells (BHS) and defines them as dramatic, involuntary episodes that occur in otherwise healthy children. Although they do not know why healthy children have these episodes, they do relate some breath holding with autonomic nervous system dysfunction.

Persistent infant crying and hyperactivity problems in middle childhood

The objective of this study was to investigate whether persistent infant crying is associated with an increased risk for externalizing behavior problems in childhood

The authors concluded that Infants who are referred for persistent crying problems and associated sleeping or feeding problems are at increased risk for hyperactivity problems and academic difficulties in childhood.

There are several reasons why infants may have inconsolable crying. The most common are:

1-   Colic

2-   Trauma from birth - particullarly undiagnosed broken bones and/ or injury to their spines and cranium causing torsion and stress to their central nervous system.

3-   Vaccine Reaction also affecting their central nervous systems.

Irritation to the nervous system, which causes the response of persistent crying, has been helped with specific chiropractic and cranial care--howver, prevention is the key!!
