As Americans we are
proud of our right to choose and we expect that right to extend into our
health care choices as well. The first story
we are featuring is one demonstrating how parents are discovering viable,
options for their families' well-being.
Titled, "New approaches to health care 'Alternative'
therapies now mainstream
for many
families" this article offers an excellent insight into parent's growing
demand for safe, effective and natural modes of care for their families.
Author
Jolene Gensheimer begins the piece with a section
on chiropractic,
"After enduring 50 hours in labor and the Caesarian
Section birth of her son Anson, Kim Pham of Seattle did not head
straight home from the hospital
to rest. She
took her 3-day-old son directly to a chiropractor because she was concerned about
the effects of the difficult labor and the unnatural tugging and pulling from
the C-section on her new baby's spine."
She continues by explaining that parents
are now making informed, educated choices for their families and no longer following
advice that may not seem to be in the best interest of their families' well being.
This quote reveals the current trend in parent's views: "There is a lot
of concern about very young people becoming increasingly medicated," says
Dr. Bruce Milliman, N.D., a naturopathic physician at Seattle Healing Arts, who
has been practicing for 25 years. "Parents ask, 'Is it really possible that
my child needs to be medicated before 5 years old?' In the past, that would be
unusual, and now it is more commonplace. I think it is disturbing to parents
who might be more thoughtful or better educated."

Are we loosing our right to choose?
The following article addresses an very important issue on informed health care choices. Written by Lisa Collier Cool in a recent issue of Baby Talk, this write up is sure to get parents alerted to protecting their right to choose.
Lisa begin the article with, " Amber Marlowe anticipated an easy delivery
when she went into labor on January 14, 2004. But after a routine ultrasound,
doctors at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, in Pennsylvania, decided that
the baby — at what looked like 13 pounds — was too big to deliver
vaginally and told her that she needed to have a cesarean. The mom-to-be,
however, wasn't convinced: After all, she'd given birth to her six previous
kids the natural way, including other large babies. And monitoring showed
that the fetus was in no apparent distress.
After she said no to surgery, doctors spent hours trying to change her mind. When that didn't work, the hospital went to court, seeking an order to become her unborn baby's legal guardian. A judge ruled that the doctors could perform a "medically necessary" c-section against the mom's will, if she returned to that hospital. Meanwhile, she and her husband checked out against the doctors' advice and went to another hospital, where she later gave birth vaginally to a healthy 11-pound girl. "When I found out about the court order, I couldn't believe the hospital would do something like that. It was scary and very shocking," says Marlowe. "All this just because I didn't want a c-section."
